Aguacate Hass

History

Originated from a Guatemalan breed seed in a Rudolph Hass orchard in La Habra, California in 1926, patented in 1935 and introduced globally in the market in 1960; It is the most cultivated variety worldwide. Hass avocados are one of the most common varieties of avocado.
One of the main milestones of the industry of this variety during the last 20 years has been its dominance over the Fuerte variety in the main producing countries of quality persea [citation needed]. Hass' wide acceptance in almost all world markets has strengthened the demand for black and rough skin fruits in relation to those of green and smooth skin [citation needed]. The preference for fruits of these characteristics has dramatically changed the priorities for the genetic improvement of P. americana and in fact many of the new green varieties have been poorly planted [citation needed]. One of the greatest virtues of Hass is its prolonged harvest season, a factor that, together with its high quality, has allowed it to increase world consumption.

Characteristics

The Hass variety has an oil content that ranges between 8 and 12%. In addition, the proportion of water is low, just 60-70%. Its vitamin B complex and vitamin E content is considerable [citation needed].

Both the fruit and the seed are relatively small, with a joint weight between 200 and 300 g. The skin is somewhat leathery, rough, green to slightly blackish when it is in the tree; Once harvested, it turns purple to black as the fruit softens when ripe, so the consumer recognizes the optimal time to consume it.2

The fruit is of excellent quality, without fiber, high resistance to transport and long post-harvest life.

In general, the tree of this variety blooms only once a year, from early to mid-spring and, depending on the variety and thermal accumulation of the place, it can take between 6 and 11 months to mature. The Hass variety, especially in fresh climates, can be kept in the tree once it is ripe, for several months without any apparent deterioration, which allows the harvest period to be greatly extended.3
